TOQUEFEST

*FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29TH 2006

TOQUEFEST 2006 was intended to be a happening; with little preconception and next to no notification of details. Because of this, the event took a shape of its own and morphed into an intimate secret show with Treacherous Machete and a select group at an indoor location at 309 West Cordova. ( due to uncontrollable factors at the outdoor venue ). As a result, the film program was not presented properly and will be screened online over the course of the next 2 weeks. What was born out of this year's festival was one of the most memorable musical performances in the festival's history. See the photos below and video to come. See you next year.

FILMS

LIASONS / RUPTURE
Jean Detheux
NFB . 2005 . 9min 22sec

This abstract film, full of rich colours and textures, was created thanks to an inventive use of digital technology. It grew out of an unusual process of interchange between the painter Jean Detheux and the composer Jean Derome. The result is a rare meeting of images and music. What we get is an intense meditation on a world in constant renewal, where every form that emerges is immediately engulfed by the next one. It constitutes a sort of diptych with the film Rupture, which follows. A film without words.

A TRAGIC STORY
WITH A HAPPY ENDING
Regina Pessoa
NFB . 2005 . 7min 40sec

A little girl finds acceptance in embracing her own difference. This whimsically lyrical film has the timeless charm of an old fable - one whose subject is difference and self-affirmation. Through images evoking the rich texture of a woodblock print, the filmmaker has created a world of contrasts complemented by a lively soundtrack with a rhythmic beat. Technique: photocopies with images scratched into India ink on glossy paper.

DOMINOES / DOMINOS
Daniel Schorr
NFB . 2006 . 10min 7sec

Dominoes uses characters based on the tiles of this universal game to illustrate the tensions and conflicts when a newcomer struggles to integrate into a pre-established group. This lively animated short, set to tunes inspired by Brazil's chorinho music, puts a modern meaning to the old domino theory as these characters ultimately learn about openness, flexibility and cooperation& and sharing one's dots. Dominoes is another film in the ShowPeace Series on conflict resolution, which includes Dinner for Two, When the Dust Settles, Bully Dance, Elbow Room and Tête à Tête à Tête. Designed as open tools for discussion and brainstorming about conflict situations for young people and general audiences of any nationality, the films in this series have no spoken dialogue, and character designs are without distinct gender, racial or cultural references. This series has received support from UNICEF and Justice Canada. Technique: Cut-out animation.

EMPTY ROOMS
MEAN IDLE MACHINES

PHILIP REGAN
NFB . 1942 . 2min

This short animated film produced during World War Two, shows how a character named Plugger helps the war effort by renting out his spare room so that a new worker can be brought in to work an idle machine at the munitions plant.

THE CAROUSEL RITE
Zoltan Gayer & Peter Molnar
Hungary . 2005 . 12min

Famous magnuses from faraway lands arrive at a small town. They have come to execute the mysterious Carousel rite.

PATTERNS 3
Jamie Travis
Vancouver . 2005 . 18min 25sec

A vibrant split-screen musical finale to The Patterns Trilogy. Pauline, having washed her hands all night, suffers from the driest of hands. Michael, having sent her paper airplane love letters all night, has a bad case of paper cuts. With damaged hands and anguished hearts, Pauline and Michael reveal through song the nature of their enigmatic relationship.

THE WILLOWZ:
WE LIVE ON YOUR STREET
Michael Sladek
USA . 2006 . 3min

Lo-fi animation telling the story of how The Willowz saved themselves and you from the Medz epidemic fueled by giant corporations bent on selling their wares to parents who have no clue!

CHALAZAE
Samantha Krukowski
USA . 2006 . 5min

Eggs, shot on glass from below and above, were the primary image material for Chalazae. Of particular interest are the cellular and cosmic forms that appear, and the microscopic and macroscopic worlds that are evoked.

UNICOT
Visuals by Ani Castillo
Mexico . 2006 . 3min

A beautiful mixture of colour & texture made with cola, milk, black ink, paint & detergent.
