{ films : NFB } WALKING CATFISH BLUES

Director: Paul Morstad : NFB, 2004, 4min

When an animating artist and a bluesman hit the blacktop, the creative mix lifts off. Their personal chemistry fuels a funky, funny trip, destination outrageous. Walking Catfish Blues features a catfish who leaves his swamp in search of better things. A species of fish that can move on land, clarias batrachus sashays blithely through surreal landscapes where life vies with death, and time is outside time. Paintings jive to the beat of the blues, and faux Canadian landmarks warm to the lazy drawl of the singer. Bluesy lyrics evoke longing, the kind that grabs you when you´re out there alone. Sometimes you want, is not sometimes you got, is not something you need, is not something you have. Even catfish aren´t immune.
